la belle et le desk job

"The hardest period in life is one’s 20s. It’s a shame because you’re your most gorgeous and you’re physically in peak condition, but it’s actually when you’re most insecure and full of self-doubt. When you don’t know what’s going to happen, it’s frightening."

It all started innocently enough. Wall Street was Everest. Internships. 1st job. Sleepless nights, weeks, months... Then with years in the rearview mirror, it was time to step away and figure out exactly how far this breathless trek had taken me. Now this belle has made the leap into fashion. Here goes nothing!

Celine announced back in January that they’d canceled their fall 2012 show due to designer Phoebe Philo’s pregnancy (she’s due in April). Instead, Philo will host a presentation in Paris on Sunday. While some have questioned the label’s decision to forgo a fashion show (and all the hype that comes with it), many women feel even more attached to the brand because of it. A piece in yesterday’s Times quotes over a dozen working professional women who swear by Philo’s designs — indeed, the article basically reads like a list of women gushing about their Celine wardrobes — partly because they relate to her desire to balance motherhood with her career.

Apparently DC ranks as the #1 city for individual monthly spending on wearable items.

  1. Washington D.C.: $263/month
  2. Arlington, Virginia: $254.58/month
  3. Nashville, Tennessee: $251.17/month
  4. Scottsdale, Arizona: $243.17/month
  5. Dallas, Texas: $228.58/month
  6. San Francisco, California: $227.42/month
  7. San Jose, California: $221.17/month
  8. Seattle, Washington: $221.17/month
  9. Austin, Texas: $213/month
  10. Bakersfield, California: $201.50/month

I guess given that Arlington, VA has the highest density of educated workers, I’m not entirely surprised that it ranks #2 on the list. Though, DC is a bit of a surprise, as I wouldn’t call it a fashion capitol. But as they say, money doesn’t necessarily buy style.
